Protective forest should be cleared
Gries am Brenner (OTS) – Last week, on Thursday November 9th, 2023, the negotiation for the clearance of the protective forest to build the new Lueg Bridge in the direction of Innsbruck took place in the municipality of Gries am Brenner. The forest law expert refers to his report from March 9th, according to which he believes there are no objections to the application. The head of the process and the representatives of the municipality of Gries pointed out that an assessment of the meteorological events – hurricane in July 23 and mudslides at the end of October 23 – were not yet taken into account in the report dated March 9, 23. The report therefore needs to be supplemented, but the report “on protective forests with a significant protective function will essentially remain intact,” said the expert. The Tyrol section of torrent and avalanche control is responsible for mudslides and rockfalls.
The municipality of Gries is waiting for the expert’s additional assessment and has the right to comment on it. In a statement in the minutes, the representative of the municipality refers to the mudslide on the night of October 31st, which occurred in a place where one would never have expected it and the protective nets were simply swept away. The event occurred at a location that is not relevant to the procedure, but this event presents a completely new meteorological hazard that cannot simply be ignored during the clearing process. The influence of climate change is probably relevant to the procedure.
The municipality will ensure that, in addition to the additional opinion from the forestry expert, an assessment of the torrent and avalanche control is also obtained with regard to the effectiveness of the protective forest to be cleared and reserves the right to request such an assessment as part of a statement.
