Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) is no longer running for the SPÖ’s federal committees. The city boss wants to concentrate fully on his task in the federal capital, the APA said on Monday morning. Today, the Vienna city party nominated City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky as a candidate for the Federal Executive Board instead of Ludwig. Federal party leader Andreas Babler showed understanding.

The SPÖ’s presidium and board will be re-elected at a party conference scheduled for November 11th and 12th in Graz. The candidates for the committees are nominated by the states and frontline organizations; confirmation is then only considered a formality.

Even after Ludwig’s resignation, Vienna is strongly represented on the board, for example by the second president of the National Council Doris Bures, deputy mayor Kathrin Gaal and the chairman of the red town hall club Josef Taucher. In any case, Bures will probably be represented in the presidium, and finance officer Christoph Matznetter also comes from the city party.

Babler emphasized in a written statement that Ludwig had informed him of his move in advance. Of course he respects his “personal decision”. It is important that the Vienna SPÖ continues to be strongly represented in the presidium in the future.

The mayor is not the only state chairman who forgoes a place on the federal committees. Burgenland’s state governor Hans Peter Doskozil will also not be running; he has not been represented on the presidium and board for several years, after he fought many a row with the federal party and was most recently defeated by Andreas Babler in the fight for the party chairmanship.

The Vienna party does not want to place Ludwig’s decision in this context. This is not directed against the new party leader; rather, people will continue to work actively in the committees, working closely and in solidarity with the federal party. Ludwig simply wants to concentrate fully on the work in Vienna, where there will be elections again in 2025.

Speaking of elections: Like last time, Vienna’s top candidate for the EU elections will once again be Evelyn Regner, Vice President of the European Parliament. Andreas Schieder, another representative of the state party, is to run as the federal top candidate.
