THE FAITH. Ludvig Åberg’s title hunt in The Open is over.

The Swede was one of many stars who collapsed in the brutal wind.

– It was too bad, he says to Sportbladet.

At lunchtime on Friday, the village winds began to whip in over Royal Troon Golf Club.

Ludvig Åberg stepped onto the course and needed to play brilliant golf to pass the qualifying mark.

He didn’t. Åberg’s problems started on the fifth hole, where he bogeyed, and then things really went downhill.

– It was tough. I didn’t make it easy for myself. The quality was not there today. I made simple mistakes, missed the green with a wedge and hit fairway bunkers with an iron off the tee, he says.

Hit a bush

On the ninth hole, Åberg’s ball disappeared into a bush. The 24-year-old was forced to drop a new one, which cost him a penalty stroke, and he dropped a stroke for the fifth hole in a row.

The Swedish world number four finished nine over par (three from the qualifying mark) and thus his debut in The Open is over.

– I followed the leaderboards at the end and knew I needed to finish hot to have a chance. WE tried everything we could. But it was too bad today, says Åberg.

“Chanced everything today”

He was not alone in toiling in the winds.

Countryman Jesper Svensson had a dark day and went ten over par.

– This is the most brutal thing I’ve been through. It felt like you were taking a chance on everything today, he says of the conditions.

Six (!) Swedes eliminated

Only one of the seven Swedes who came to play went on to the weekend.

Alex Norén had a dream start on Thursday but dropped to two over par and is tied for 18th ahead of the weekend.

– I’m frustrated that I don’t come in under par today and have an honest chance. I think the game fits, but it was hard to make birdies out there today.

He is nine strokes behind leader Shane Lowry.
