Best known for directing the multi-award-winning film Wretched, filmmaker Ladj Ly has recently been fined by the courts. The Bobigny prosecutor’s office announced on Friday, July 19, 2024, that the director will have to pay a fine of 50,000 euros for breach of trust in the management of his production company and an association. The Bobigny prosecutor’s office indicated that “Investigations have highlighted poor financial management” from the association La Cité des arts visuels and the filmmaker’s production company, called Lyly Films. In fact, Ladj Ly avoided a criminal trial after admitting his guilt in this case. He thus benefited from an alternative to the legal proceedings that were aimed at him. For his part, the director’s brother, who held the position of president of these two entities, was sentenced to a six-month suspended prison sentence.

He will also have to pay a fine of 100,000 euros. In addition, he is now banned from exercising a commercial or industrial profession for five years. The Bobigny prosecutor’s office has, however, specified that the investigation conducted against Ladj Ly has highlighted that there is no real desire for personal enrichment on the part of the filmmaker. Additionally, no embezzlement of funds has been noted by the authorities. The director did not miss the opportunity to publicly display the conclusions of the investigation on social networks. “5 years of persecution against me“, he wrote.

Actress Ludivine Sagnier, who regularly collaborates with Ladj Ly’s film school, expressed her frustration on Instagram. “I encourage Mediapart, Le Parisien, Current Values, CNews, BFMTV, to stop spreading false information about the Kourtrajmé and Ladj Ly school, but rather to take an interest in the work that we do day after day for the training and integration of hundreds of young people from all backgrounds in the cinema professions”, she wrote.

Ladj Ly has fully reimbursed the sums used. “Our school is small but necessary. It is your support that we need. Is it so difficult? In order to convince you, I suggest to former students of the Kourtrajmé school to kindly leave a small testimonial in a comment concerning the contribution of the school in their lives. Thank you“, then added Ludivine Sagnier. The investigation targeting Ladj Ly mainly focused on the purchase of a house in Montfermeil, in Seine-Saint-Denis, and the work that followed. The latter was allegedly financed with money from his association. In total, 300,000 euros were allegedly used. However, the director fully repaid the funds between December 2020 and February 2022.

Best known for directing the multi-award winning film “Wretched,” filmmaker Ladj Ly has recently faced legal repercussions. The Bobigny prosecutor’s office revealed that Ly was fined 50,000 euros for breach of trust in the management of his production company and an association, La Cité des arts visuels. Although Ly admitted his guilt, stating that investigations showed poor financial management, he was able to avoid a criminal trial through alternative legal proceedings.

Ludivine Sagnier, a frequent collaborator with Ly’s film school, expressed her support for him on social media, urging media outlets to focus on the positive work they do in training young filmmakers from diverse backgrounds instead of spreading false information. The investigation centered on the alleged misuse of funds to purchase a house in Montfermeil, which Ly eventually repaid in full.

Despite the legal issues, Ly’s supporters continue to rally behind him, highlighting the importance of organizations like the Kourtrajmé school in fostering talent and providing opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. The impact of this case extends beyond just the individuals involved, sparking a wider conversation about financial transparency and accountability in the film industry.
