Ludivine Dedonder, Minister of Defence, confides: “My predecessors were never asked if they had had military training…”

Ludivine Dedonder looks back on her career which led her from journalist to federal minister.

In October 2020, Ludivine Dedonder becomes the first woman to head the Belgian Defence. At the time, it was a rather neglected sector because few people thought that Europe might once more be faced with a war. Less than two years later, events propelled his position to the heart of the news. We find her in her office following climbing a staircase flanked by military equipment from another time.

What were your first jobs?

During my management engineering studies at the University of Liège, I joined the RTBF where I did some freelancing, in radio and TV in economic broadcasts. I had the opportunity to meet Paul Galopin, responsible for economic matters, who was looking for young people. As a little girl, I dreamed of becoming a sports journalist. I then asked to do an internship in sports writing and it was accepted by Michel Lecomte. I had a foot in it and one thing leading to another, I was able to work on football reports.

Besides your studies, so…

Yes, part time. Once graduated, I was offered to be a university assistant in logistics. I also gave evening classes, I corrected exams. It should be noted that logistics matters are essential in Defense matters.

That’s to say ?
