Kolkata: Lucknow Supergiants beat Kolkata Knight Riders by one run in the play-offs following a thrilling last over. Batting first, Lucknow scored 176 runs for 8 wickets, while KKR, who came in reply, scored 175 runs for 7 wickets. Rinku scored an unbeaten 67 off 33 balls, including 6 fours and 4 sixes, but might not lead to victory.
Lucknow’s opponent in the eliminator will be known tomorrow when Gujarat Titans and CSK meet in the first qualifier. KKR missed the playoffs following losing to Lucknow. Ravi Bishnoi and Yash Thakur took two wickets and Krunal Pandya took one wicket for Lucknow.
Chasing a target of 177 runs, KKR attacked from the start. Jason Roy and Venkatesh Iyer got off to a blistering start to thwart Lucknow. Venkatesh Iyer got out following adding 61 runs for the first wicket. Krishnappa Gautam, who hit 3 fours and 1 six in 15 balls, brought it to the hands of Ravi Bishnoi.
But those who came following might not capitalize on this good start. Nidhish Rana (8 off 10 balls) returned with a catch to Krunal Pandya off Ravi Bishnoi. Jason Roy (45 off 28 balls) was clean bowled by Krunal. Jason Roy got out following playing a smashing innings including 7 fours and 1 six. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (10 off 15 balls) was also dismissed by Yash Thakur.
Bishnoi clean bowled the dangerous Andre Russell (7 off 9 balls). Shardul Thakur (3 off 7 balls) also came back without a flash. Yash Thakur got the wicket. Sunil Narine (1 off 2 balls) was run out and KKR’s defeat was assured. But on one side Rinku Singh fought with fifty. But Yash Thakur bowled the last over and caught Rinku. With this, Lucknow took the play-off ticket with a one-run win.
Losing the toss and batting first, Lucknow did not get off to the expected start. Opener Karan Sharma was lost when there were 14 runs on the scoreboard. Karan, who scored 3 runs in 5 balls, was brought to the hands of Harshit Rana Shardul Thakur. But the combination of Quinton De Kock and Prerak Mangad with the second wicket gave hope to Lucknow. With the scoreboard standing at 55, Mankad was dismissed by Vaibhav Arora to break the partnership.
Mankad scored 26 runs in 20 balls including 5 boundaries. In the same over, Aurora dismissed Marcus Stoinis. Facing 2 balls, Stoinis was trapped by the short ball. Stoinis was the architect of Lucknow’s victory once morest Mumbai. With skipper Krunal Pandya also disappointing, Lucknow faced a big crisis. Krunal scored 9 runs including 1 six off 8 balls.
On one side, Varun Aaron dismissed Quinton De Kock who was struggling, and Lucknow were in a shambles at five for 73. The opener scored 28 runs off 27 balls including two sixes. Nicholas Puran and Ayush Badoni, who came together later, tried to get the team out. Badoni was dismissed following forming a partnership of 74 runs. Badoni scored 25 runs off 21 balls including 2 fours and 1 six.
Nicholas Puran also got out following a devastating innings. Puran returned with a 30-ball 58 including four fours and five sixes. He returned with a catch to Venkatesh Iyer off Shardul Thakur. It was the innings that lifted Lucknow, who were facing a big collapse. Ravi Bishnoi (2 off 2 balls) was clean bowled by Shardul.
Krishnappa Gautam (11* off 4 balls) and Naveen ul Haq (2* off 3 balls) remained unbeaten. With this, Lucknow got an improved score of 176 for 8 wickets. Vaibhav Arora, Shardul Thakur and Sunil Narine shared 2 wickets each while Varun Chakraborty took one wicket.
