At the age of 16, Lucero Mejía performed her first Olympic Games representing Guatemala.
Lucero Mejía will never forget July 29, 2024, as that is the date on which the young swimmer made her debut at the Olympic Games representing Guatemala.
The pool at the Paris la Défense Arena was the venue where Mejía, at just 16 years old, achieved a time of 1:03.42 in the 100-meter backstroke event, a time that earned her fourth place in her qualifying heat.
The Guatemalan was only behind Aviv Barzelay (Israel), Xeniya Ignatova (Kazakhstan) and Zuri Ferguson (Trinidad and Tobago), who clocked 1:02.30, 1:02.51, and 1:02.75 respectively.
After the completion of the remaining qualifying heats, Mejía finished in 28th place overall out of 36 competitors.
The top 16 advanced to the semi-finals, which will be played at 12:57 p.m. at the Paris la Défense Arena.
Mejía became the fourth Guatemalan to see action at Paris 2024, after Jacqueline Solís in judo, Kevin Cordón in badminton and Jean Pierre Brol in hunting gun shooting.
