LPDP-RI Alumni and Scholarship Recipients speak out regarding the current situation of democracy in Indonesia. The group firmly supports the Constitutional Court’s decision Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024 in order to restore the spirit of democracy to the people through the 2024 Simultaneous Regional Elections.

“The past two days, the state and political situation has been very concerning. A handful of political elites are trying to hijack democracy through the revision of the Pilkada Bill to annul the Constitutional Court Decision Number 60. We strongly reject the political maneuvers in the Indonesian House of Representatives in an effort to ratify the revision of the Pilkada Bill,” said alumni representative, Wahid Chandra Daulay, in a written statement, Saturday (24/8).

The alumni also urged all stakeholders, especially the government and legislature, to uphold the principles of transparency and accountability in every legislative process.

“We will monitor and supervise the cancellation of the ratification of the revised Pilkada Bill that has been announced by the Deputy Speaker of the DPR,” he added.

The alumni also urged the KPU to immediately issue a PKPU based on the Constitutional Court’s decision so that legal certainty can be achieved.

“We condemn all forms of intimidation and oppression that violate democratic principles and threaten civil liberties, carried out by state officials,” said Wahid.

They also demanded protection for activists, civil society, journalists, and academics who advocate democracy and the enforcement of just legal supremacy.

“We ask the police to release student activists and other protesters who were arrested and detained during the August 22, 2024 protest,” he said. (Z-11)
