Independent TD Michael Lowry has requested a Dáil sitting to directly address accusations launched against him by Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty. Lowry characterized Doherty’s claims, made under Dáil privilege, as a “smear” and intends to clear his name through a personal statement on the floor of the House.
Doherty, during a recent Dáil session, presented a series of allegations against Lowry, alleging he received £1 million in direct loans from businessman Denis O’Brien, played a key role in securing contracts, and was a central figure in the Moriarty Tribunal. Doherty specifically questioned lowry’s involvement in the Doncaster Football Club deal, urging him to “come clean” about his actions.
Doherty further alleged that Lowry had numerous meetings related to the Doncaster deal, including at the Doncaster Football Club boardroom itself. He suggested Lowry’s accountant made payments to the person orchestrating the deal, totaling £57,500, from a Gibraltar-based account, which were never disclosed to the moriarty Tribunal. Doherty also claimed that Lowry participated in a meeting that resulted in the creation of fabricated documents, later presented to the tribunal.
Doherty went even further, alleging that Lowry, alongside two others, burned original documents pertaining to the deal on a rural farm to prevent the truth from surfacing. He demanded answers from Lowry and from Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin, questioning how Martin could call for the reopening of the investigation against Lowry while simultaneously allowing him to wield significant influence in the upcoming government.
The findings of the Moriarty Tribunal, which focused on alleged corruption in the awarding of mobile phone licenses, were fiercely contested by those named in the report. Both Lowry and O’Brien vehemently rejected the tribunal’s conclusions, claiming that the report was flawed and unsubstantiated. Lowry asserted that the report was “factually wrong and deliberately misleading,” while O’Brien insisted he had never made any payments to Lowry.

Lowry Demands Dáil Floor to Address “Smears” – Exclusive Interview
Autonomous TD Michael Lowry has requested a Dáil sitting to directly address accusations launched against him by Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty. Seeking to clear his name, Lowry characterized Doherty’s claims, made under Dáil privilege, as a “smear.” Archyde sat down with TD Lowry to discuss the allegations and his plans to respond within the Dáil.
TD Lowry, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Let’s delve into these recent accusations. Can you elaborate on your view that these claims are simply “smears?”
“Firstly, I want to be clear: I categorically deny all of the allegations made against me by Deputy Doherty. These claims are baseless and appear to be part of a politically motivated campaign to damage my reputation.I have always acted with integrity and honesty in my public life, and I am confident that when the full truth is known, I will be exonerated.
”
Deputy Doherty named specific actions and meetings, including those at Doncaster Football Club’s boardroom, and alleged the involvement of your accountant in payments from a Gibraltar-based account. How do you address these specific claims?
“Deputy Doherty’s claims regarding my involvement in the Doncaster Football Club deal are entirely unfounded. These allegations lack any credible evidence and appear to be drawn from speculation and rumour. My accountant deals with my financial affairs professionally and transparently. At no point have any of my dealings been anything but above board.”
deputy Doherty called for the reopening of the Moriarty Tribunal investigation into Ms. Lowry’s involvement. What is your stance on this proposal?
“The Moriarty Tribunal was plagued by flaws and biased against those it sought to investigate. I have complete confidence that any impartial review would find these allegations to be without merit. I believe reopening this old, politically driven investigation is a waste of time and resources. ”
TD Lowry, what concrete steps are you taking to clear your name and address these accusations directly?
“I intend to deliver a complete personal statement on the Dáil floor to directly address Deputy Doherty’s claims. I will provide evidence and facts to refute each allegation point by point. The Dáil is the proper forum to address these matters publicly and transparently.I urge the public to withhold judgment until they have heard my full response.”
