Many people suffer from high cholesterol, which puts them at risk of a number of serious health problems.

And if you have high cholesterol, it means that you have too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in your blood.

While this may not cause problems at first, over time it can build up in the blood vessels leading to blockages. This can lead to serious conditions such as heart attacks and strokes, according to the British newspaper express.

Diet is a major factor as to whether cholesterol is too high or not. For example, it is known that eating a lot of saturated fat causes cholesterol to increase significantly. However, there are foods that can do the opposite.

According to nutritionist Jo Hilditch, black currants have cholesterol-lowering properties.

She said, “An easy way to include heart-healthy foods in your diet is by using a handful of black currants. This berry can play a vital role in fighting high cholesterol and, in turn, cardiovascular disease.”

What does the science say?

“It’s all regarding flavonoids, which are natural compounds known for their powerful health benefits,” Hilditch explained. “These compounds have been shown to improve blood vessel function and reduce blood stickiness, which reduces the risk of a small harmful blood clot forming.”

Scientific research indicates that flavonoids may also prevent the formation of bad cholesterol (also known as oxidized low-density lipoprotein), which, if left unchecked, can cling to the walls of blood vessels, leading to narrowing of the arteries and the possibility of cardiovascular disease.

Laboratory tests have given some credence to these effects, as flavonoids have been shown to reduce the rate at which bad cholesterol is formed.

In addition, experiments indicated that blackcurrant juice can positively affect vascular function.

One study showed improved blood flow in the forearm and reduced shoulder muscle stiffness following taking black currant anthocyanins.

What does the research say?

In a study published in the journal Molecules in 2021, I experimented with black currant extract on 12 healthy, young women.

It found that very low-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein (both types of “bad”) cholesterol were lowered following 29 days of taking the extract daily.

The study said: “In this study, we examined the effects of black currant extract (BCE) on serum lipid levels in young, healthy women as test subjects.

“There was no effect following four days of taking it, but the level of total cholesterol in the blood decreased following 29 days of taking it.

“In addition, the level of low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol decreased significantly, and the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol also showed a decreasing trend.”

She added that black currant extract “prevents the absorption of cholesterol.”

If you are concerned regarding your cholesterol levels, you should talk to your doctor.
