A ship has once once more got into trouble off the Lower Saxony North Sea coast: a 400-metre-long container ship ran aground shortly before entering the Weser. The CCME plans the rescue.

A 400 meter long container ship ran aground regarding six kilometers north of the island of Wangerooge during the night.

According to the CCME, it is the ship “Mumbai Maersk”, which sails under the Danish flag and was traveling from Rotterdam to Bremerhaven. Several tugboats and multi-purpose vessels were dispatched to the distressed vessel during the night. In addition, a team of specially trained seafarers was brought on board.

An initial attempt to bring the container ship back into deeper waters failed, however, said a spokesman for the CCME. The accident happened at the entrance to the Weser. “Fortunately there are no injured people, everyone is fine,” he said.

The salvage of the ship depends on the tide. “We would like to start now, but we have to wait for the highest water level,” said the spokesman. A salvage attempt in the morning would therefore make no sense. First, high tide must be awaited before a salvage can be attempted once more. The next flood will be around 1 p.m., which is the earliest possible attempt for the next rescue attempt.

It was only at the weekend that an unloaded freighter got into trouble in a strong storm off the East Frisian coast. In the end, however, he was able to continue his journey to Denmark under his own steam.
