Lower Austria’s first complete hydrogen storage system was grandly launched on September 3, 2024 at the Lower Austria Sports Center. The event, attended by state governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner and more than 250 business and diplomatic representatives, marked an important step towards sustainable energy storage and an environmentally friendly future.

Well-known guests and exciting programming

The event started at 3:00 pm with a welcome by the moderator, followed by two round table discussions with Wolfgang Ecker (WKO), State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, Japanese Ambassador Riku Komatsu and Mr. NRAbg. Christian Hafenecker and Lukas Renz from HydroSolid and Mayor Matthias Stadler from St. Pölten took part in the meeting. During the subsequent facility tour, all participants were given an in-depth look at the entire facility.

In her speech, Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner emphasized: “Hydrogen is a core component of our strategy to make Lower Austria one of Europe’s leading green economy regions. Through the sports center Innovative projects and technologies such as hydrogen storage systems With the help of companies like HydroSolid, we are setting new standards in energy supply.

After the opening remarks by Mr. NRAbg. Hafenek emphasized the huge importance of science, research and innovation for the future of Lower Austria and Austria, followed by two rounds of insightful discussions. In his answer, Mr. Riku Komatsu emphasized the mutual learning opportunities between Austria and Japan in the field of hydrogen technology. In his statement, Wolfgang Ecker emphasized the need for technological openness in order to achieve sustainable progress in this promising field.

A milestone in sustainable energy storage

HydroSolid’s hydrogen energy storage system is installed on the grounds of the Lower Austria Sports Center. The remaining green solar energy from the recently commissioned solar garage is stored in this hydrogen system and made available again at night. The modular design of the HydroSolid storage center includes system control, electrolytic hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and fuel cell reconversion. The project is the first hydrogen low-pressure system with a maximum operating pressure of 35 bar. When fully developed, this demonstration project can store up to 135 kWh of electrical energy and is intended to enable area lighting at a sports center in Lower Austria to operate CO2-free and sustainably.

HydroSolid founder Lukas Renz is delighted with the project’s success: “With the first hydrogen plant in Lower Austria, we are setting new standards for renewable energy storage. Green hydrogen is the solution Key to the energy transition and decarbonization challenges.

About HydroSolid

Founded in 2021, the startup aims to store green hydrogen as efficiently as possible. The challenge with green hydrogen is storage. Until now, hydrogen has been stored under high pressure, which is unsafe and expensive. HydroSolid developed “Hive One” for this purpose. It is a compact, fully recyclable and environmentally friendly storage system that does not use any critical raw materials.
