St. Pölten (OTS) – On Global Recycling Day, which highlights the importance of recycling worldwide, Lower Austria is presenting itself as a pioneer for a sustainable circular economy. With an impressive recycling rate of 63% and a separation rate of 66%, the state is already setting standards for environmentally conscious behavior and exceeding the EU targets for 2025.
LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf emphasizes the proud results: “Lower Austria takes the challenges of environmental protection seriously, and the impressive recycling rate of 63% is evidence of our joint efforts. But Global Recycling Day also reminds us that we must continue these efforts to protect our environment and preserve it for future generations.”
LAbg. and President of the Lower Austrian Environmental Associations, Anton Kasser, adds: “The path to a sustainable future leads through responsible recycling and conscious waste separation. In Lower Austria we not only focus on numbers, but also on innovative projects that underline our contribution to the global environmental initiative.”
The basis for a functioning circular economy is the professional separation of waste materials. It is important to have useful offers that help to separate waste for everyone and in the best possible way everywhere. In some regions, a special 4-ton racking system has been developed. This small waste station enables correct separation even in small rooms such as classrooms or offices. Practice shows that the more convenient and simple waste separation is, the better it is implemented.
Valuable resources are hidden in our electrical devices such as cell phones and e-cigarettes. Especially with these small devices, there is a high tendency for them to either lie around in drawers or be mistakenly disposed of with residual waste. Under certain circumstances, the batteries contained therein can ignite and explosions or fires can occur. At the same time, many components can be reused, thereby protecting the environment. Therefore, some regions offer the opportunity to take these smaller old electrical devices to the nearest waste/recyclables collection center using pre-collection assistance. For installed batteries e.g. For example, in electronic toothbrushes, some waste associations also offer a separate area so that these batteries can be removed by a specialist and recycled.
“These projects are a clear signal for sustainable action and climate protection in Lower Austria. We encourage citizens to actively participate and make a valuable contribution to the circular economy,” explains Stephan Pernkopf.
In addition to innovative regional projects, Lower Austria relies on continuous educational work. A look at the past shows that recycling is not only the focus, but correct waste separation is also crucial. The waste consultants have been doing valuable work since the 1990s by educating citizens regarding correct separation.
“Separation of waste is a fundamental step for effective recycling. Our waste consultants not only offer personal advice services, but also the digital service of SeparationABC, which shows the correct disposal route for each substance at community level. In doing so, we give people the tools they need to actively contribute to a sustainable future,” explains Anton Kasser.
