Low pressure zone detected after cyclone John passes

Conagua detected a low pressure zone that interacts with the remnants of tropical cyclone John. There is a 50% probability of cyclonic development in 48 hours and 7 days. This afternoon it was located 160 kilometers (km) southwest of Acapulco, Guerrero.

Authorities will maintain surveillance in the area.

Tropical Cyclone John causes landslides on roads in Oaxaca

On Tuesday night, residents of Oaxaca reported landslides on the Barranca Larga – Ventanilla highway due to the rains left by Hurricane John. The road remains closed due to falling mud and large rocks that impede passage.

Throughout the night of September 24 and the early morning of Wednesday 25, extraordinary rainfall is expected in the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, due to the remnants of Hurricane John, which was downgraded to a tropical cyclone and then to a low pressure area.

According to Conagua, a low pressure zone with a probability of cyclonic development – interacting with the remnants of tropical cyclone John – off the coast of Guerrero, in interaction with the monsoon trough, is expected to maintain the period of extraordinary rainfall, that is, greater than 250 millimeters in Guerrero and Oaxaca.

There will also be torrential rains (from 150 to 250 mm) in Chiapas; intense rains (from 75 to 150 mm) in Michoacán, Puebla, Tabasco and southern Veracruz; very strong rains (from 50 to 75 mm) in Colima and Jalisco; strong rains (from 25 to 50 mm) in the State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Morelos and Tlaxcala; showers (from 5 to 25 mm) in Mexico City, Nayarit and Querétaro, as well as isolated rains (from 0.1 to 5 mm) in Aguascalientes and Guanajuato.

The National Coordination of Civil Protection issued an alert to close ports as a preventive measure due to the passage of Tropical Cyclone John.

In the Pacific, Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, was closed to larger vessels, while the ports of Salinas Cruz, Puerto Ángel, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, and Zihuatanejo, Acapulco, and Puerto Marques in Guerrero were closed to smaller vessels.

Hurricane John caused a sinkhole on the road to Costa Chica

Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda toured the affected areas of Guerrero and reported that a sinkhole had formed on the Costa Chica highway in Guerrero. The incident occurred in the direction of Copala, near the community of San José de las Palmas in the municipality of Cuautepec, leaving residents isolated.

Vehicular traffic is partially interrupted, and Civil Protection officials have asked the population to take extreme precautions.

One more victim has been added to the list of those who died as a result of Hurricane John. Although the authorities have not yet released an official report, Milenio reports revealed that a young man died in Ocotitlán, Tehuanapan, Guerrero due to the hurricane.

A young man of approximately 28 years of age died after a part of the hill near his home fell on top of him. Despite rescue attempts, he was unsuccessful and joins the death toll left by John.

Previously, authorities reported that a woman and a minor died when their house collapsed in Tlacoachistlahuaca; later, they confirmed a third death in the municipality of Malinaltepec, the victim was a middle-aged woman.

Guerrero is warned of thunderstorms after the passage of John

Heavy to very heavy rain with lightning is forecast for the next three hours.

The Costa Grande, Tierra Caliente, Acapulco, Centro, Montaña, Costa Chica and Norte regions will be the most affected by this situation.

This weather situation will be present between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone John will continue to cause rain

According to the latest report from Conagua, Tropical Cyclone John has been downgraded to a remnant low pressure over Guerrero. However, due to the interaction with the monsoon trough, it will continue to cause intense and occasional rains.

The states affected by this situation will be:

  • Michoacan
  • Guerrero
  • Oaxaca
  • Chiapas
  • Tabasco
  • Veracruz
  • Puebla

The rains will also affect the west and center of the country with heavy rainfall.

John will continue to cause wind gusts of 50 to 70 km/h, waves of 1 to 3 meters high, as well as the possible formation of waterspouts on the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, with wind gusts of 40 to 60 km/h with waves of 1 to 2 m high on the coasts of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán.

Death toll from John rises

This morning, the governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, announced that in the municipality of Tlacoachistlahuaca a woman and a minor died due to a landslide following the impact of Hurricane John.

Hours later, local authorities reported that the death toll had risen to three, as it was confirmed that an elderly woman also died when her house collapsed in the municipality of Malinaltepec.

John weakens over Guerrero

The SMN reported that at noon on Tuesday, John was downgraded to a remnant low pressure over the state of Guerrero. Its center is located 60 kilometers north of Tecpan de Galeana and 115 kilometers northwest of Acapulco; the system is still moving west-northwest at 6 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and gusts of up to 75 km/h.

Extraordinary rainfall is still expected in Guerrero and Oaxaca; torrential rainfall in Chiapas; intense rainfall in Michoacán, Puebla, Tabasco and Veracruz; as well as showers and heavy rainfall in the center of the country, including the Valley of Mexico.

Likewise, winds with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h and waves of 1 to 3 meters high are still expected in western Oaxaca and on the coasts of Guerrero; gusts of 40 to 60 km/h and waves of 1 to 2 meters on the coast of Chiapas; the SMN also predicts the possible formation of waterspouts on the coasts of these entities.

Due to John’s weakening, tropical storm watch zones have been discontinued and authorities have announced that they will no longer issue further information on this system.
