Every year in France, just over 1,000 women die of cervical cancer. In question, the human papillomavirus, or HPV. However, the virus is still poorly known, or rather, poorly understood.
In “Love, smear and papillomavirus”, published in May 2023, general practitioner Ramon Basagana and naturopath Anaïs Gomez combine their different methods to analyze in detail the causes and the different modes of transmission of the virus, the different types of infection, and especially how to avoid them.
By exploring the universe of this virus and discrediting prejudices regarding it, the two specialists open the door to a world where the papillomavirus is no longer a hidden killer. Here are three things you might not know regarding this virus.
1. HPV is a ticking time bomb
Do you suspect a papillomavirus infection when you are faithful to your partner? Don’t panic, this is far from being proof of your partner’s betrayal. In his book, Dr. Basagana explains that following sexual intercourse, HPV can remain latent in the body for years, before suddenly appearing following a drop in immune defenses, for various reasons. The virus can even fly under the radar as long as it is latent, hence the importance of getting to screen regularly. “Between HPV infection and the appearance of cancer, it can take twenty years or more,” warns the GP.
