A 19-year-old Chinese man suffered a lung puncture because he was screaming in love with his favorite band.
The young man suffered a condition known worldwide as “pneumothorax”. What is this condition:
A pneumothorax is atelectasis of the lung. A pneumothorax occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and the chest wall. The pressure of this air is on the outer side of the lung, which causes it to contract and collapse. A pneumothorax may be a complete contraction of the lung or only a portion of it. A pneumothorax can result from a blunt or penetrating injury to the chest, certain medical procedures, or damage from an underlying lung disease. Symptoms usually include sudden chest pain and shortness of breath, and in some cases, atelectasis can be a life-threatening disease. Treatment for a pneumothorax usually involves inserting a needle or chest tube between the ribs to drain excess air, but a simple pneumothorax may go away on its own.
And Chinese media reported that the young man was screaming excitedly during the band’s performance when he suddenly felt sharp pain in his chest and began to have difficulty breathing, then passed out.
The young man was taken to hospital, where doctors concluded that he had ruptured one of his lungs.
Doctors were able to remove the excess air and relieve pressure on his collapsed lung.
