People leave Patras and all the regions of Achaia and go up to Zarouchla to taste the unique specialties of Marco the Italian, at the now famous “1022 M – Mountain Kitchen”.
Markos, the “Italian”, then. Marco Pierani. From executive of a multinational pharmaceutical company in MilanOpen trattoria in Zarouchla! And Marithea the Greek. From Zarouchla. The reason why 43-year-old Markos became Greek!
And as he himself confided a few days ago to a permanent resident of Zarouchla… “I’m not moving anything from here. And if a pharmaceutical company gives me 10,000 a month to return to Italy, I will not accept it. I found my paradise in Zarouchla and Akrata and I’m not leaving it”!
Marcos left Milan, where he worked as a high-ranking executive of pharmaceutical companies, to settle in Zarouchla.
12 years ago, on vacation in Milos, he met and fell in love with Marithea’s current wife, who comes from Zarouchla.
With driving force his love for Marithea and his adoration for Greece, he came for permanent installation in Zarouchla, betting on “1022”!
This is the name of the trattoria he set up next to a spring with running water in the village.
The name of the restaurant is “1022 M – Mountain Kitchen” and represents the altitude at the point of the mountain village where the shop is located, as well as the marriage of Italian with the mountain cuisine of Zarouhla.
Marcos or “The Italian”, as he is known locally, managed to breathe life back into the village.

This is the name of Marco’s compatriot, an Italian chef, who also temporarily left Milan and settled in Zaruhla.
Andrea, the chef of “1022 M”, elevates the dishes served in the Italian restaurant.

“I am a love immigrant” he used to say himself, in his perfect Greek.
The first years in Greece, he lived and worked at Petros Kokkalis’ MIKYO “Organization Gi”.
When his contract with MIKYO ended, he started helping his father-in-law and Marithea’s father, in the agricultural work in the fields of Zarouchla.
That’s it! O Markos fell in love with the village and decided to bond even more with him, creating his restaurant.
Perhaps the fact that his mother-in-law Mrs. Ariadni, is the president of the village with 8 inhabitants!
Marcos he lives in the village and runs his restaurant all year round.
With his wife Marithea, they go back and forth to Akrata, where their permanent residence is.
Those who have met him have had fun! Great character, open, hardworking, resourceful.
