Serhiy Antonenko, a Ukrainian volunteer soldier, was fighting once morest the Russians in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine when he was seriously injured by a Russian mine. “We went to the village of Arkhanhelske,” says Serhiy. “I noticed there was a motion detector in one of the buildings. Normally, you look for any wires on the ground, but in this kind of situation, the mines explode as soon as you enter the room. It was like an electric shock, like you put your finger in a socket.”

Given the seriousness of his injuries, Serhiy, alongside other soldiers, was transported to Belgium to receive treatment at the Queen Astrid Military Hospital in Brussels. The soldier was seriously injured in his arms and legs, and also lost the use of one of his eyes.

“I have been looking for this person my whole life”

A difficult period for the Ukrainian, who nevertheless quickly found a smile once more following his meeting with the Belgian-Ukrainian Lidia Zubrytska. The young woman, who grew up in Belgium and speaks Ukrainian fluently, went to the hospital alongside her mother, a professional interpreter.

Lidia quickly formed a close bond with Serhiy, who spent a year in rehabilitation. “I remember a story: we were laughing so hard that a nurse came to our room and asked us if everything was OK,” confides Lidia. The young woman went to the hospital daily to check visit to Serhiy. The two lovebirds quickly became inseparable. “I feel like I’ve been looking for this person my whole life,” explains Serhiy.

The two lovers are already visualizing a future in Ukraine, but Serhiy must first focus on his recovery. “I just want to be able to walk. Being able to walk ten meters alone: ​​that’s my dream,” he concludes.
