The actress is on view this Wednesday from Love and forests, a film regarding a woman who falls under the control of a possessive and manipulative man. A strong film, presented at Cannes.

A few months following her César, Virginie Efira is already back at the cinema this Wednesday with Love and forests by Valérie Donzelli, a film regarding a woman who falls into the spiral of influence, which she defends this week at the Cannes Film Festival.

In this psychological thriller, Virginie Efira plays not one but two roles: those of two twin sisters, one of whom falls madly in love with a childhood friend, found by chance, and played by Melvil Poupaud.

Behind the profile of the ideal son-in-law hides a possessive and manipulative, even Machiavellian man, who will weave a toxic web around the character of Virginie Efira, cutting her off from her loved ones and putting her under his thumb.

“A maddening story”

“I wanted to understand how a woman might find herself in this situation without realizing it”, explains to BFMTV Valérie Donzelli, who adapts here with Audrey Diwan (Golden Lion 2021 in Venice for The Event) a novel by Eric Reinhardt.

“I immediately saw the cinematic potential of the book, but I only realized it later. What made me decide to do it was my meeting with Virginie. I projected her into this character”, explains the director.

“It’s an absolutely terrifying and extremely fine book, regarding a character we love, and who nevertheless finds himself embarked on a maddening story”, confirms Virginie Efira, who was immediately seduced by the project.

“Personal Resonances”

The two women confide in having recognized themselves in the course of the character: “Everyone has small CVs in relation to questions of influence. The book obviously had personal resonances.”

“The character in my film is inspired by women I know around me, stories I’ve heard, from the book of course, from me. It’s an addition of many things to create this fictional character”, specifies the director.

“The whole film says that it’s not easy to leave,” she insists once more. “I wanted to tell the story of a woman’s path to freedom. She will succeed in avoiding the inevitable. She will have the courage to go all the way to get out of it.”

Representation

For Virginie Efira, the film has an important role to play in raising public awareness of the scourge of domestic violence: “Without representation, we cannot recognize ourselves”, insists the actress, before adding:

“It is very recent to see this in a continuum of violence once morest women. It is through cinematographic representations that we can get out of [l’invisibilisation] and that there is an acknowledgment of what we are going through.”

And Valérie Donzelli concludes: “I hope the film can help people who suffer from this, give them the courage to get out of it”.
