A column by Todor Ovtcharov
There are people who just love arguments. They bathe in their anger. For them, arguing is like sparkling water that tickles their taste buds. They have so many arguments that it’s hard to believe. Like my friend L, for example, who is otherwise quiet and modest. But when she smells an argument in the air, something changes. She can create an argument out of the smallest thing – if someone has pushed ahead in a queue, if someone speaks too loudly on public transport or if someone doesn’t make room for prams on the sidewalk – such people should not meet L.

Because she is brimming with creativity to put people in their place. I once listened to her argue with someone who had been smoking without permission and it sounded like he had started Armageddon with his cigarette.
L says she always takes the side of the poor and weak. The strong are always to blame. Society lives in fear of losing its peace and comfort. All of us who avoid arguments prefer to turn a blind eye to injustice so as not to lose our comfort. Hypocrisy is humanity’s greatest virtue, said the writer Kurt Vonnegut.
A friend told me that he once loudly asked for a window to be closed in his office in Sweden. One of the colleagues present was so shocked by his tone that he had to go to psychotherapy followingwards. Luckily he didn’t hit L. Then Freud wouldn’t be able to help him anymore.
I ask L if she mightn’t take it easy and not jump from one argument to the next. “Arguments make the world turn!” she replies. I don’t know what to say because the earth is supposed to keep turning.
