If the record national player Lothar Matthäus has his way, FC Bayern should not put any obstacles in the way of defender Lucas Hernández who is willing to change.
“I would sell Lucas Hernández immediately. There is obviously nothing left of appreciation for the club,” wrote Matthäus in his “Sky” column.
The 62-year-old hardly left a good hair on Hernández, whom the German record champions had signed from Atlético Madrid in 2019 for the record sum of 80 million euros: “The price-performance ratio is negative if you look at the whole year The mentality was always there on the pitch, but he was injured several times over many months and you might remember that as a player and stay loyal to a club longer.”
Against this background, he would “put a price tag on Hernández and wish him a safe journey,” added Matthäus.
FC Bayern before “really good transfers”?
In addition to Hernández, who is drawn to Paris Saint-Germain, his compatriot Benjamin Pavard also wants to leave Bayern.
Matthäus is not worried regarding the bloodletting on the defensive given the traded names of Kim Min-jae (Napoli) and Kyle Walker (Manchester City). Both are “really good transfers,” praised the former FC Bayern professional.
“One had a fantastic season in Naples and wouldn’t that just make him a great fit for Bayern. Walker is a machine on the right side, but not the youngest anymore. That’s a man for the next two years,” said Matthäus .
“No place” for Kai Havertz at Bayern, but…
However, the Munich team is also looking for reinforcements in other positions. Matthäus explained that his “favourite” for the central striker remains Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus. “He brings everything with him and would solve Bayern’s storm problem for the next five years.”
In order to eliminate the vacuum in the central defensive midfield identified by coach Thomas Tuchel, Matthäus once more spoke out in favor of Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina).
“As a former midfielder, I think I can judge well what is needed here,” said Matthäus. Amrabat is “the best player for this position in all aspects” for FC Bayern.
For Kai Havertz, who was also traded, there is currently “no place” in the Munich squad, Matthäus stated. “But if there are departures and players like Sane, Gnabry or others leave the club from the offensive, then Havertz would of course be very high in my favor. Little Kai has become the Havertz man. A seasoned, great professional with great success abroad.”
