At the Ferme du Reposoir, in Kain, hundreds of people have already come to celebrate Lost Monday, all this weekend. “You would have seen the atmosphere on Saturday evening. It was dancing on the tables”, whispers the DJ. On Sunday, the audience is older and more family-oriented. Marie-Andrée, a pure Tournaisian, never fails to celebrate Lost Monday, also called “perjured Monday”. “Since I was very little, I’ve celebrated it. We always eat rabbit. On Monday, in principle, but for practical reasons, we sometimes also get together on Sunday. It’s sacred, even more than the New Year for we the Tournaisians!”

In Tournai, when it comes to having a good party, anyone who doesn’t have a rabbit has nothing!

At his table, André impatiently awaits the moment when the roles are going to be cast. He hopes to be king. “It’s the easiest: we’re not monitored! While the others, if they don’t drink when the king drinks, then we blacken their faces with a cork!” The roles are very diverse, ranging from jester to lackey, valet, secretary, Swiss, cook…”It’s not easy to play all these roles in a restaurant.”concedes Geneviève, at the next table, ” but when we do that at home, she’s turned inside out!”. She explains to us that she is from Athoise, but from Tournais by adoption. “I’ve been doing Lost Monday for several years. Today, with friends, but also on January 20 with many colleagues”.
