Losing digital files worries more than physical objects for most Brazilians, says Western Digital

It is not new that the virtual world has raised a number of concerns in people since the last few years. Now, a survey conducted by Ipsos and commissioned by Western Digital translates this fear into numbers, to celebrate World Backup Day in 2023, celebrated every March 31st.

According to the survey, regarding seven out of ten people (69%) fear losing digital files more than physical objects. The results of Trends of 2023 also showed that 86% of respondents know what a backup is. Of the 88% who actually do, 93% have some external device or online storage for it.

When we talk regarding the storage solution used, the free online or cloud format is the main one, with 53% preference. Next, pen drives and memory cards appear. Even so, the study found that 58% of people still prefer to back up to physical devices, or combine them with cloud services.

Among the other data, eight out of ten respondents perform backup frequently, either daily or monthly. On the other hand, those who do not dispense with the practice because they find it difficult (32%), because they forget (24%) or do not consider it necessary.

Those who combine online and physical saves understand that the advantage lies in the certainty of being able to access their files when they need to (61%), in the possibility of better managing the privacy of documents (49%) or in less exposure to security breaches (37%) .

Scenario in Brazil

Within these numbers, Brazil is the country surveyed where the highest percentage of people are who know what a backup is (89%), where they are most performed (90%) and where the frequency is higher (average of 9. 2 times a month), including the highest rate of daily backups (26%).

Regarding concerns regarding losses, the scenario indicated something similar to that seen in other places. 66% of Brazilians are also more afraid of losing their digital files than physical objects (34%).

Methodology

The survey was conducted online, through the Ipsos Digital platform. Sampling was of the non-probabilistic type, with 1,000 cases nationwide per country, men and women, over 18 years of age, from all socioeconomic levels. Fieldwork took place between February 27 and March 3, 2023.
