This match will not go down as an anthology encounter for LOSC, but the main thing is elsewhere. For the third day of the 2023-2024 Europa Conference League, Lille overthrew Slovan Bratislava at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium (2-1) on Thursday evening. Faced with a very compact team, the Mastiffs conceded the first goal of the match and found themselves trailing at half-time.
But thanks to the substitutes put on the pitch by Paulo Fonseca during the second half, Yusuf Yazici and Rémy Cabella scored two goals to allow the Northerners to win. In the standings, Lille passes its evening opponent and occupies the leading position in this group A.
Yazici, a goal and a record
On paper, Lille OSC should assume the status of favorite in this C4 meeting. But in reality, the matter was not easy for Jonathan David’s teammates. Lacking confidence, the Lille center forward did not find the net at home. But the Canadian international was still able to count on the support of a public who was not too harsh towards him during his exit at the end of the match. Facing them, Paulo Fonseca’s men had a team with excellent momentum with eight consecutive wins in all competitions. Coming to defend, the reigning Slovakian champion was realistic with an achievement from Aleksandar Cavric on a well-oiled collective movement (25th, 0-1).
Without much offensive creation throughout the first period, LOSC relied on David but Milan Borjan stopped his two attempts in the match (32nd, 57th). Until the hour mark, Lille had not found the solution. Fortunately for the Mastiffs, the combined entries of Edon Zhegrova, Alexsandro Ribeiro and Nabil Bentaleb provided sufficient dynamism to overthrow the visitors. Following a loss of defensive ball, Yazici combined with Cabella to equalize and score his ninth goal in the European Cup with the Lille jersey, the best total tied with Matt Moussilou (68th, 1-1).
Subsequently, Lille avoided conceding a second goal on the counter-attack thanks to a save from Alexsandro as the last defender (74th), then Cabella went from decisive passer to scorer when deflecting the cross from Zhegrova (82nd, 2-1). Frustrated by this unfortunate outcome, Slovan Bratislava finished the match numerically inferior following the expulsion of Lucas Lovat (84th). Before traveling to the Slovak capital in two weeks, LOSC takes control of the group and can aim for the rest of the competition with a certain serenity.
