Los Angeles Man Charged with Murder, Arson, and Burglary in Brutal Desert Killings

A man from the Los Angeles area, identified as Huangting Gong, 30, has been officially charged with a string of serious offenses including murder, kidnapping, arson, and burglary in connection with the heinous deaths of a couple. Gong is accused of brutally killing Jing Li and Kuanlun Wang, both 37, who were reportedly owed a staggering $80,000 by him.

The chilling events unfolded in the Southern California desert on October 12, when officials allege that Gong shot Wang in the head, subsequently transporting his body in Wang’s Tesla to the couple’s residence in Brea, located approximately 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. It is at this home where the situation escalated further—Gong is said to have violently struck Li with a hammer, coercing her to divulge the code needed to access her phone.

After the brutal assault, Gong allegedly used Li’s Tesla to abduct her, driving her to the desolate San Bernardino desert, where he executed her and set her body ablaze. Following this gruesome act, Gong returned to the couple’s home to collect Wang’s body for a similar fate, transporting it to a remote area in Riverside County to dispose of it by fire.

After ensuring the bodies were destroyed, Gong was reported to have driven both victims’ Teslas to various desert locations before setting them ablaze as well. In a calculated and callous move, he then returned to the couple’s residence and stole a staggering $250,000 worth of luxury items, which included high-end watches, handbags, shoes, and clothing.

“No one deserves the fate of being executed and then set on fire in the middle of the desert,” stated Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer, emphasizing the brutality of the crimes committed. Prosecutors confirmed that the charges filed against Gong carry “special circumstances” enhancements, which could lead to a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if he is convicted.

Attempts to contact Gong for his side of the story have thus far been unsuccessful. As of Tuesday evening, it remained unclear whether he had secured legal representation, with the Orange County public defender’s office failing to respond to inquiries.

Gong was apprehended on November 5 at Los Angeles International Airport upon his return from Seattle. He was subsequently booked into the Orange County Jail, where he is being held without bail, as authorities work to bring him to justice.

“Depravity does not adequately describe the callousness involved to kill a human being and then drive around in the victim’s own car with his body inside in order to carry out the rest of his plan,” Spitzer further remarked in a statement, highlighting the shocking nature of the crimes.

Gong is set to appear in California Superior Court in Santa Ana for a hearing scheduled on December 2.
