Los Angeles Galaxy Struggles: Injury Woes and Lack of Goals Plague the Team

The situation that the Los Angeles Galaxy is going through is worrying since the backbone of the team will miss the remainder of the season due to their respective injuries. Forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández, midfielder Gastón Brugman and defender Martín Cáceres will not be able to help the team in their aspirations to qualify for the playoffs, the great objective this year.

Now the weight of the team has fallen to the 23-year-old Riqui Puig, who has scored three goals and four assists in the last six games from July 1 to date. In other words, much of the Galaxy’s success this season will depend on what the former Barcelona player can do on the pitch game following game.

Puig scored once more once morest Vancouver on Sunday, but the Whitecaps claimed a 2-1 victory and the Galaxy were eliminated in the group stage of the first edition of the Leagues Cup at Dignity Health Sports Park. Thus adding three consecutive defeats in all competitions and that worries the current coach of the Los Angeles team, Greg Vanney.

The lack of goal is influencing the results

“It’s very frustrating,” Vanney began by saying. “I think it’s a reflection of the games we’ve had all season. It’s not that we had many shots on goal, but we created chances in the rival area and our shots were blocked. I think we’re not fine in the last third and when you don’t finish the plays you leave the opponent alive”.

“For me it’s regarding executing the plays better. I am not a firm believer in being lucky when playing. For example, the injury that Gastón suffered is not bad luck, but rather disappointing and things that you cannot control. But during a match you can control a lot of things and we are not fighting to win every ball and every duel” he added.

The reality is that Los Angeles Galaxy is having one of its worst seasons in its glorious history in Major League Soccer and they seem not to see the light at the end of the tunnel. They are currently in the penultimate position in the Western Conference and have just 25 goals in 22 games, the second team with the fewest goals scored. For now, the dream of qualifying for the playoffs is receding.

Reinforcements might arrive in the coming weeks

In addition to losing three key players, the Galaxy are serving a league-imposed ban earlier in the season and are barred from making non-MLS signings this summer due to irregularities in the 2019 signing of Cristián Pavón. What they will be able to do is sign international players who are free agents as of August 3 and a striker and a midfielder are expected to arrive.
