As we prepare for the holiday season, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health encourages people to get the latest COVID-19 vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones during the holiday festivities. An updated version of the vaccine is effective once morest the strain of the virus currently circulating in Los Angeles County. Getting vaccinated is the safest way to protect yourself from severe illness from COVID-19.
Getting vaccinated well in advance of the gathering, preferably at least 2 weeks in advance, will provide the greatest protection once morest severe illness that might disrupt holiday plans. Research shows vaccines can reduce the risk of long-lasting COVID-19 and reduce the chance of severe illness, hospitalization and death if you do get COVID-19.
Everyone age 6 months and older is recommended to receive at least one dose of the updated vaccine (available starting in September 2023), regardless of an individual’s previous vaccination status and regardless of previous COVID infection. For children under 5 years of age or people with weakened immune systems, Public Health recommends discussing with their healthcare provider the most effective timing and dosage of newer COVID-19 vaccines, which may recommend multiple doses.
