A rabies bat advisory has been issued for LA County.
The Los Angeles County Department of Health said a bat that carries rabies has recently been found in a cafe in Malibu.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said at the time that a person from a Malibu cafe took the bat away, but some people, including children, appeared to have come into contact with it in the process.
So far, there have been no reports of rabies among people who have come into contact with the bat in question.
L.A. County Department of Public Health Dr. Muntoo Davis said rabies in humans can be fatal and, in severe cases, life-threatening.
Therefore, it is emphasized that people who come into contact with bats at cafes in Malibu should be treated for rabies as a preventive measure.
Especially for children, parents must check for contact with bats, and children who have come into contact with bats are advised to seek treatment at the hospital, said Dr.
A total of 68 rabies bats were confirmed in Los Angeles County for one year last year (2021), the highest number since counting began in 1961.
The Los Angeles County Department of Health urges people to report sightings or contact with rabies bats in Los Angeles at 1-213-974-1234.
