MEXICO CITY.- During his usual morning conference this Thursday, the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorassured that his government cannot, and “it is not up to it” to stop the President of Russia, Vladimir Putinshould you accept the invitation to the investiture of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo next October 1st.
“We cannot do that, it is not our job, we are against war, we are in favor of peace,” said the president in response to a question.
The Mexican leader’s reaction comes after the controversy generated by Claudia Sheinbaum’s general call to all nations with which Mexico has diplomatic relations, including Russia, although it is not known which countries have confirmed their attendance.
The news that Sheinbaum invited President Putin to her inauguration ceremony caused controversy in the Russian press on Tuesday, as the president has an arrest warrant for the invasion of Ukraine in the International Criminal Court (CPI), of which Mexico is a member.
“The president has already explained that Mexico has relations with almost every country in the world,” López Obrador said.
However, he ruled out Ecuador and Peru because his government has “differences” with both.
“There are no relations with Ecuador now, because they invaded our embassy, and there are no good relations with Peru either. We are talking about governments, but not about peoples because we are very respectful of the brother peoples of Ecuador and Peru,” he said.
He also recalled that all governments with which Mexico has relations have been invited and they are the ones who decide whether they attend or not, and everything has to do with Mexico’s diplomatic policy.
“We also invited everyone about a year ago to the (Independence Day) parade last year. We invited countries that we always invite to participate, to create a delegation and to participate in the parade, and they came from Russia and they made a huge fuss about it because they were from Russia and other countries,” he said.
The virtual president-elect did not specify on Wednesday whether Vladimir Putin had accepted the invitation, and when asked by journalists she also did not clarify whether she expected the attendance of the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahuor the president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.
He also did not specify whether the King of Spain, Felipe VIwill be present at the event.
The latter after Sheinbaum Pardo said on July 30 that she agreed that “there must be forgiveness on the part of Spain” for “the Spanish conquest” that left “many massacres and violence,” although she insisted on maintaining relations with that country.
Since 2019, López Obrador, whose government ends on September 30, has insisted that Spain must apologize to Mexico for the abuses committed during the conquest.
