Lopez Obrador considers the attempted arrest of Javier Corral as “revenge”

MEXICO CITY.- This Thursday, during his usual morning press conference, the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorconsidered a “political revenge” he attempted arrest a Javier Corral Jury, former governor of Chihuahua (2016-2021) accused of corruption when he was an opponent, but now he will be a senator of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

Failed attempt to stop Corral

After a Failed attempt by Chihuahua police for arresting Javier Corral on Wednesday in Mexico City, López Obrador said that “this has to do with political differences that come from a long time ago” with the current governor, Maria Eugenia Camposof the National Action Party(PAN).

Corral Jurado also belonged to the PAN, but the president pointed out that Campos “allied himself” with the former governor of Institutional Revolutionary Party (at) Cesar Duarte (2010-2016), arrested in Miami, Florida, USAin 2020 for embezzlement, extradited to Mexico in 2022 and that carries its process in freedom since last June.

“It turns out that the current governor of Chihuahua and the former governor Duarte are allied against Corral because Corral was the one who promoted the accusations against Duarte, who had to go to the United States, where he was arrested and extradited, brought to Chihuahua and here he was released,” he said.

The president also criticized the fact that the attempted arrest, carried out by the Chihuahua Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in a restaurant in the Roma neighborhood, occurred during prime time for the news program on Imagen Televisión.

Mexico City prosecutor rejects collaboration

In a video broadcast by the channel, the agents tried to arrest Corral, but the owner of the Attorney General’s Office of the Mexico City, Ulysses Larapresent at the restaurant, told them that the department under his charge refused to cooperate with them.

The capital prosecutor argued that the institution had to agree to work together and had not formally responded to the request made by state agents.

The president agreed that “there was no procedure” and that, beyond the “legal opinion,” the “political reality” is a “kind of revenge.”

He even denounced that they are trying to prevent Corral from assuming his position in the Senate as of September 1, in addition to the fact that the national press predicts that the former governor will be part of the expanded cabinet of the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

“Since these are matters of political disputes and revenge, you see how these things are, when Corral is about to take office as senator, in order to prosecute him they would have to strip him of his immunity, so since there are only a few days left before he is appointed senator, they acted hastily, because once he is in jail he can no longer be a senator,” he said.
