López Obrador Calls on the Sinaloa Cartel to Adopt Responsibility

MEXICO CITY. — This Friday, during his usual morning press conference, the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorasked the warring factions of the Sinaloa Cartelwhich keep a large part of the capital of that state paralyzed by fear, which “act with a minimum of responsibility“so that lives are not lost.

When a journalist asked him if he was confident that his request would be heard, he replied bluntly: “The president of Mexico is always listened to.”

The president once again downplayed the clashes between two armed groups of the Sinaloa Cartel, one led by Los Chapitos — the sons of the former leader of the organization Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán — and the other by followers of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, one of the biggest Mexican drug lords.

Arrest of “El Mayo” in the USA

“El Mayo” was arrested in July in the United States along with one of “El Chapo’s” sons, Joaquin Guzman Lopezafter the latter allegedly set a trap for him and kidnapped him to take him to Texas in an operation that still has many questions and that uncovered some links between Sinaloa politicians and the cartel.

Culiacan, semi-paralyzed

Since Monday the city of Culiacán is semi-paralyzed, with schools empty, businesses closed and hardly any transportation due to the fear that people will be caught in the middle of a shootout, their cars stolen or buses set on fire.

National holidays suspended

According to the state prosecutor’s office, as of Thursday there had been 12 deaths, 11 gunshot wounds, 20 missing persons and 31 vehicle theft reports. Although the state received reinforcements from the military and artillery aircraft, on Thursday the Governor Ruben Rochafrom the same party as the president, chose to officially suspend classes as well as celebrations for the Independence Daywhich are celebrated on September 15 and 16.

Part of the population has complained that the military only arrives at the sites of confrontation after the conflict has already passed. López Obrador insisted that the problem will be solved “with the presence of the Armed Forces” but he also told the criminals that they “must act with a minimum of responsibility, they are their family, they are their countrymen.”

“They have to find other ways that do not harm innocent people, that do not confront each other, that do not result in loss of life,” the president added. “And that they also take care of themselves and their families.”

López Obrador’s security strategy during these six years, harshly criticized by much of the population and which has generated many tensions with the United States, has been based on avoiding head-on clashes with the cartels and opting to increase scholarships and support for young people so that they do not enter the ranks of organized crime.
