Looting, burglaries and robberies: The Spar supermarket chain in Austria is already well prepared for such scenarios in the event of a power failure. In Switzerland, too, the first retailers are preparing for the horror scenario. “We are observing developments in the energy sector very closely and are in the process of working out the necessary emergency plans,” said Lidl Switzerland on request. The company did not want to disclose any further details.
“It’s very important to prepare. Blackouts are a horror scenario, but you can never completely rule them out,” says Markus Baumgartner from the Swiss Association for Crisis Communication VKK. He believes that Spar’s preparations make sense in principle. “Through such preparations, panic and chaos in the blackout can be avoided.” Baumgartner recommends that private individuals create their own emergency supplies.
“Basically, we feel well prepared”
At Migros, the current development is more relaxed: “Basically, we feel well prepared. There is no reason to panic – even meticulous preparations for extreme scenarios do not mean that they have to be implemented,” it says on request. However, there is a lively exchange with the federal authorities.
According to a spokesman, Coop has various contingency plans and is prepared to prevent this. The situation is similar at Manor. And Aldi Switzerland reports: “We are always following the current situation closely and evaluating it as part of our crisis management in order to adapt our existing emergency concepts if necessary.” None of the companies wanted to reveal what the emergency concepts look like in detail.
