Loosdorf’s Water Supply Emergency: A Community Confronts Severe Shortages

Due to the exceptionally heavy rainfall and the rising water levels of the Pielach and Mühlbach, a civil defense warning was issued for the market town of Loosdorf (Melk district) on Sunday morning. The water supply system has been out of service since Sunday evening. The communities of Hürm and Dunkelsteinerwald are also affected.

Duration currently cannot be estimated

The Loosdorf community says it is working hard to resolve the problem. “Unfortunately, the entire control system of the system has been affected,” reports Mayor Thomas Vasku (SPÖ). Employees were only able to access the water supply system on Monday morning. It is not yet possible to estimate how long it will remain out of service. “It may be working again today, but it may take up to two days,” says Vasku.

In the meantime, residents can obtain drinking water indirectly. Since Monday morning, the municipality has been providing mineral water, initially two bottles per person. These can be picked up from the Loosdorf and Albrechtsberg fire departments. Older people or those who cannot come to the distribution points in person due to the flooding, for example, can contact the municipality or the fire department directly.

“Hold on a little longer”

It is an unusual situation: “You want to flush the toilet and then nothing works. That happened to me today in the municipality,” says Mayor Vasku. Since Sunday, the municipality of Loosdorf has been pointing out on its website that it should keep waste water in buckets ready for flushing. “It is unpleasant and you are not used to it, but we have to hold out a little longer.” At least the grocery stores have been able to stay open.

The emergency services on site are currently also being supported by firefighters from Steyr. In view of the flood disaster in his municipality, Mayor Vasku is grateful for the help from Upper Austria: “The people of Steyr know this from home.”
