“Look, I’ll Tell You So You’ll Understand”: 5 Job Interview Mistakes Candidates Make | Business

“It happens that a person does not pass the first stages because he just gets too busy. Job interview time is limited, so it should be used properly. Think about the interview plan in advance and say only what is important,” says Silvija Petrošiūtė, a consultant at the job advertisement portal NO-CV.

From her experience, a human resources professional presents the most common behavioral mistakes that spoil the impression of an employee.
Wet cold hands and a flabby handshake, also known as a “fish”. “If your hands are sweaty and cold, arrive early, go to the restroom and warm them up with water.” Then they won’t be wet from sweat. And the handshake of a confident person is possible
learn – practice. This is the very first impression,” says S. Petrošiūtė.

Candidates can be overwhelmed by not being able to tell you something about themselves that is relevant to the topic. “I’m human, I graduated from primary school in Kapsuk, it’s now called Marijampole…” is not what a recruiter wants to hear. “Or there are times when the first minutes of the conversation are taken up by a story about the family. After all, you came to the interview to sell yourself to the employer – talk about your best qualities, experience, competences. Everything else will be asked by the other side of the conversation if it is interesting,” advises the NO-CV consultant.

S.Petrošiūtė calls continuous chattering the third mistake. According to her, logical pauses in the conversation are necessary so that the other side can intervene. “If you’re afraid that silence means a loss of focus, try rehearsing a job interview. Faced with a twenty-minute monologue, anyone can lose the desire to condemn themselves to work with such a colleague. A recent real case – a fundamentally competent man was not hired precisely because of his inability to keep quiet,” the expert teaches.

It is also very important to listen to questions rather than teaching your thoughts without connection. According to S. Petrošiūtė, “I know better what you want to ask me” is not a good strategy when you want to be hired.

Finally, the so-called gift of omniscience gets in the way during job interviews. “Look, I’ll tell you so that even you will understand” – S.Petrošiūtė has also heard such a statement during the interview. “Even if you feel like you’re head and shoulders above the person asking the questions, remember one thing – this is where they decide whether or not to continue to allow you to participate in the competition.”

You’ll joke when you’re already colleagues,” advises the consultant of the job advertisement portal NO-CV.
