Chaos has a name: Hammock. Founded at the beginning of 2020 during the first lockdown by two Norwegian school friends, the band, which has grown into a trio, is dedicated to a mix of hardcore and noise rock with all sorts of crazy, experimental, occasionally even cautiously catchy extremes. The first EP is now followed by the album with the expansive title „Look How Long Lasting Everything Is Moving Forward For Once“which dismantles everything with growing enthusiasm.
The first two tracks sum up the musical diversity perfectly. At first, “Long Lasting” is decidedly rough and is dedicated to core extremes that even go as far as black metal and are bent on destructiveness with their staccato attacks and angry vocals – broken, fucked up, foaming, downright mad with rage. Afterwards, the video release “Seance” with electronic bubbling and Liars cross-references in the verses leads you on the wrong track, because the quasi-main part unpacks an amazing (noise) rock riff that you can’t escape – crazy in the best way senses.
“Eat You Alive”, the title says it all. Hammok swing their fists with increasing enthusiasm, dive into chaotic hardcore and even mathcore depths, show their teeth and yet surprise with a sudden musical opening, with experimental inserts and renewed attacks. This brings back memories of electronically influenced Kvelertak, Haust and Converge. How “Wannabe (Billboard No 1)” emerges from the initial confusion and strikes up a pure, anthemic hardcore punk wrecking ball is caught on the wrong foot. Yes, it’s still the same band, and what a fantastic song this turned out to be.
It may take a while for the individual parts to come together, but any patience is worth it twice or threefold. Hammok’s debut is unusual, almost every one of the eleven songs sounds different and explores a wide variety of nuances from noise rock to punk and hardcore to math, from catchy to raucous. “Look How Long Lasting Everything Is Moving Forward For Once” is uncomfortable and charming at the same time, a real rager of the clingy kind that only reveals its true beauty in installments. It’s worth staying on the ball.
