Classic Ferraris from the 1950s and 1960s are often the stars of auctions, with prices for these rare cars sometimes exceeding $10 million, especially for one-of-a-kind models. These cars tend to live in private collections, periodically changing hands as investments that become even more valuable with age.
Of course, there are also cars that live in the same family for decades and never appear on sale, while remaining in excellent condition. Until last year, this small group also included the Ferrari 212 Inter coupe with a unique body built by specialists from the Ghia studio in 1951. Among the cars of the Italian brand, this example set a record for the time spent in the same hands – 71 years.
Last October, the first owner of the Ferrari 212 Inter died at the age of 98. He purchased this car more than 70 years ago, maintained it himself for many decades (he was taught all the tricks by the Italian engineers from Maranello who built the car) and carefully monitored its condition. Under the hood there is complete order and perfect cleanliness. Not only does the two-door retain its original 2.6-liter V12 engine, but it has never required major repairs! Paired with the original unit is a five-speed manual transmission.
The true age of the car is revealed only by the interior with a wooden steering wheel and light leather upholstery, which has lost its original luster over the years. However, this state of the interior indicates that the owner of the Ferrari regularly drove his car, and the good state of preservation of the complete interior is a sign that the car has not undergone restoration – for collectors, such specimens are often valued even higher than models with an unclear biography, restored to museum condition. Although it is known for certain that in the 1970s the car body was repainted, and the carpets in the interior were replaced.
Interestingly, it was this car that the young (at that time) Ferrari company took to exhibitions. In total, about 80 two-door Ferrari 212 Inter were produced in the first half of the 1950s, however, due to the fact that the bodies for these cars were made by different design bureaus (at that time cars with appearances from Vignale, Touring, Pininfarina, Ghia and other studios were produced) ), it is almost impossible to find two identical cars. In addition to two- and four-seat coupes, there were also open-top versions.
