The numerous diversions put in place as part of the renovation of the Léonard intersection and the traffic expected on the road will lead to long traffic jams on Friday, the Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer – AWV) announced on Thursday. The work initially planned for the night of Thursday to Friday, between 0:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., has been postponed until Friday.

The Leonard tunnel is located at the intersection of the Brussels ring road (R0) and the E411 motorway, in Tervuren. It has been undergoing extensive renovations since April 2023.

The ring tunnel and the E411 tunnel will be completely closed early Friday followingnoon. The E411 tunnel will be lifted using temporary jacks and the old steel supports will then be removed overnight from Friday to Saturday. The old supports will then be replaced by a new large cylinder.

On Friday, motorists coming from Zaventem and heading towards Namur will also have to go as far as Groenendaal to make the U-turn.

The AWV explains that the schedule changed because preparation for the lifting operation took longer than expected.

The agency therefore advises drivers to avoid the Léonard intersection and the surrounding area all day Friday, and certainly from midday.

Serious disruptions are also expected on the Eastern ring road and the E411 on Sunday May 12, for the return to school. The Flemish Traffic Center expects waiting times of at least one hour.
