London police said on Saturday night that one man had been arrested, and on Sunday a second person had been arrested.
A man in his 20s who was arrested on Saturday in connection with an incident the previous day has been released on bail until mid-March pending further inquiries, the UK’s capital police added.
Banksy’s work – a STOP road sign with three aircraft resembling military drones – appeared at an intersection in south-east London’s Peckham on Friday morning.
Less than an hour after the undercover street artist confirmed it was his latest work and posted a photo of it on social media, witnesses filmed one man with the help of another person ripping it off.
Photos and videos posted on social media show one of the men running with a sign under his arm.
London police initially said they had not been notified of the alleged crime.
But Sadarko Council, which is responsible for local services including street markings, said late on Friday it wanted the sign back and reported the incident to authorities.
Officials asked anyone who saw the sign removed or “who may have information about the incident or the location of the sign” to call police.
At the time, in a statement issued on Friday, the deputy head of Sadarko council, councilor Jasmine Ali expressed her displeasure at the illegal removal.
“It should not have been removed and we would like to see it returned so that everyone in the community can enjoy Banksy’s great work,” she said.
“We have reported the removal of the sign to the police so that they can help get it back,” the officer added.
