London Mayor calls for community solidarity in times of unrest

The mayor of LondonLabour’s Sadiq Khan on Wednesday urged Londoners to look out for and support their “friends and neighbours” following recent violence in several UK cities. He also warned far-right groups fomenting unrest would face “the full force of the law”.

The mayor issued the warning via X, following calls by these groups to hold protests tonight outside 30 immigration centres in the UK, using social media.

“The lawlessness, racism and violence we have seen in towns and cities across the country over the last week has been truly shocking,” the London mayor said.

He also stressed that he is aware of information that far-right groups are planning to attack places in London, stressing that anyone who thinks of spreading hatred and fear in the city will be subject to the law.

The Labour politician stressed that acts of violence and disorder would not be allowed on the streets of London and warned that “if you commit a crime, you will be arrested and face all legal consequences.

The Muslim mayor sought to reassure the population, particularly ethnic minorities, by pointing out that he maintains constant contact with the Metropolitan Police of London (Met) and works closely with community leaders to protect buildings and places of worship, such as mosques, and provide security to citizens.

“I know the shocking scenes have left many Muslims and ethnic minority communities frightened and fearful, so I call on my fellow Londoners to look out for their friends and neighbours and show them that solidarity and compassion are what Londoners are all about,” he said.

He added that in London, there is zero tolerance for racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism or any form of hatred and we pride ourselves on being open, diverse and welcoming to all religions and backgrounds.

“It is deeply embedded in the fabric of our great city and is the reason those who seek to divide our communities will never win,” Khan said.
