Frost and snowfall in the British capital caused major disruptions at several London airports. They had to close their runways and cancel many flights between Sunday evening and Monday morning.
Stansted Airport in particular, located in north London, said overnight from Sunday to Monday on Twitter that its runways were “temporarily closed while clearing them of snow”. It is mainly used by the low-cost airline Ryanair,
“Due to bad weather, your flights are likely to experience disruptions,” he added. On its website, many flights scheduled for Monday morning were canceled.
Ryanair also warned on Twitter that due to severe snowfall in the United Kingdom, the runways at Stansted and Gatwick (in south London) were temporarily closed overnight, disrupting all scheduled departure flights.
More than 50 flights canceled on Sunday
According to the BBC, more than 50 flights were also canceled at Heathrow airport, the capital’s main airport, on Sunday due to freezing fog.
On Monday morning, car traffic was also still very disrupted on the main roads around London, with major traffic jams due to snow and ice on the roads.
Rail passengers were also suffering major delays and cancellations on Monday morning, while some London Underground lines were disrupted.
The UK has been experiencing a particularly intense cold snap for several days, with temperatures dropping as low as -10 degrees in some areas, and episodes of snowfall and frost, particularly in the north and south of the country, even if the meteorological agency (MET) specifies that these temperatures ‘are not unusual at this time of the year’.
