London approves law to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda

LONDON – After months of controversy and obstruction, the British Parliament last night approved the law that allows illegal migrants to be deported to Rwanda without the possibility of return. The long game of “ping pong” is over: this is the name of the political game between the House of Commons and the House of Lords, with the peers of the Kingdom repeatedly rejecting the law by proposing amendments which were then rejected by the deputies and so on.

In the end the Lords, who are nominated and not elected by the citizens, had to bow their heads and accept the will of the deputies “representing the people”. Great satisfaction for the prime minister Rishi Sunakwho had pledged to “stop the boats” of migrants landing on English coasts at any cost.

“Enough now, no more prevarication, no more delays,” Sunak said yesterday, stating that MPs would not go home until the law was approved. Parliament will remain in session until night. Without ifs and buts. Flights to Rwanda will depart.”

First flights to Rwanda in July

The first flights to Rwanda are expected to depart in July – although it is unclear which airlines will take on the task, with even RwandAir having refused fearing damage to its reputation.

Today or tomorrow the law should receive the “royal assent” necessary for its entry into force. King Charles III will have to sign it despite himself: the then heir to the throne in 2022 had in fact defined the proposal to send migrants to Rwanda as “frightening”.
