Loïc Le Cloërec’s Collection: A Journey through Serge Gainsbourg’s Universe

He might have had a toy. Loïc Le Cloërec had a record. The fault of a train controller, departing from Le Mans, during a trip, who hummed the tune of the “Poinçonneur des Lilas” while punching the tickets. The virus was implanted. Small holes in comic strips, the work of Serge Gainsbourg makes its way into his universe. He no longer asked, on birthdays, for records by the artist. And a little Doors, 1970s oblige, we are not savages. Fifty years later, helping his international career, he is at the head of a unique set of some 1,400 pieces…

Fifty years later, with the help of an international career, he is at the head of a unique set of some 1,400 pieces. A collection that he intends to bring to life. Charlotte Gainsbourg wants to open a museum in the family home? Bank. It is. A ten-year loan. Nothing less.

“I’ve been hearing regarding the project for regarding ten years…” Loïc Le Cloërec is delighted. This consultant, who recently left Bordeaux for the Libournais, is proud to participate. From his home on the Isle, in Saint-Antoine, his Eden by the water, he goes back in time. A racing driver for more than fifteen years, the man with 297 different covers for “I love you, me neither” has made engines roar all over the world. “At each destination, I was looking for new records, covers that I hadn’t yet, in all possible languages. “The profession has its advantages, such as making friends who are just as mobile, who relay its hunt internationally. “By dint of taking the plane, I sympathized with stewards, who prospected for me. »

a golden disk

His loot? Japanese, Thai, Korean covers of his favorite titles. But also Spanish, Congolese, Iraqi or Iranian – “from the period of the Shah”. And even a Greek cover of “Je t’aime, moi non plus”. “Knowing that Gainsbourg always sang in French. His only record in English was ”Sea, sex and sun” with Jane Birkin. »

Loïc Le Cloërec owns a copy of the box signed by Alain Bonnefoit on the texts of “Melody Nelson”.

Ph. B.

Loïc Le Cloërec has acquired a few nuggets. Such as this gold record of “Auxarmes, et cætera”, to which he is particularly attached. “That of the record company”, he specifies. The artist’s copy is also in circulation. Gainsbourg had offered it in 1984 to RTL for a charity sale, recalls the Coutaud-Begarie auction house, who recently put it up for auction.

Souvenir of Milord l’Arsouille

The man evokes his copy of “An evening at Milord l’Arsouille”, which sees Lucien Ginsburg, freshly adorned with his nickname, accompanying the singer of Michèle Arnaud. And the famous acetates, these wedges, made before the pressing of the final version. Or even this object book, which saw him depart from his personal paradigm, “only collecting records”.

“There was one despite everything, stored in a pocket, in the cover, he smiles. It is a box made by the artist Alain Bonnefoit to the libretto by Melody Nelson. He had illustrated the lyrics. 300 copies had been printed at the time. Booksellers did not know how to sell it, many sold the lithographs and the disc separately. There must be 7 or 8 complete boxes left today, estimated at 15,000 euros each…”

New covers

Loïc Le Cloërec tracks sales, opportunities, successes. It takes flair, opportunism, a bit of audacity. He thus acquired authenticated and signed discs, offered by Gainsbourg to his butler Fulbert, dispersed by his heirs following his death. His other feat of arms? An auction, dispersal of the assets of a company that worked with record companies. “The presentation was on Thursday. I mightn’t find anything in the scattered objects. In spite of everything, there was a closed cupboard. A guard had the keys, he opened it for me. “And there jackpot, a set of archived covers, all unpublished, from different artists including his idol. “Test covers, most of which have never been published. I said thank you, the guard closed it, I left. The next day I bought the cabinet as it was. I don’t think anyone else knew what was in it…”

This loan to Maison Gainsbourg, for Loïc Le Cloërec, is more than a tribute. It is a part of himself that he entrusts to them. A passion that he might not express with the artist, who died in 1991. “I only met him once, in the 1980s, in a nightclub. I said hello to him, but I didn’t dare disturb him. »
