Logitech G Cloud: what is this console worth that allows you to stream your PC and Xbox games?

Launched at the end of May, the new Logitech G Cloud portable console intends to make a name for itself with gamers by betting on streaming to play Xbox Series X and PC games in particular. A machine that we were able to test and which has interesting advantages.

While Sony has just unveiled its Project Q which should allow you to enjoy PS5 games thanks to local console streaming, Logitech is venturing into the world of the cloud to offer its G Cloud console. Here, there is no need to have consoles at home, everything goes through a good internet connection and a GeForce Now subscription to access PC games, or Game Pass Ultimate for the Xbox game library. Launched at the end of May in France in particular, the small Logitech machine is marketed at a price of 359 euros. A price that places it in a higher price bracket than the Nintendo Switch, but the services are not the same.

Well known to gamers for its keyboards, joysticks, mice, headsets and simulation devices (steering wheels, flight simulation equipment, etc.), Logitech puts its know-how into a console that does not aim to offer exclusive games, like the Switch for example. Its goal ? Propose a hub to access the various cloud gaming offers. In France, Nvidia’s GeForce Now and Microsoft’s Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions are available for streaming.

Careful ergonomics

Aesthetically, we find the attention to detail of Logitech. The ergonomics of the G Cloud is designed on the model of Xbox controllers, renowned for their quality from this point of view. In fact, we hold the portable console well in hand, with an undeniable quality of the joysticks, the multidirectional cross, the buttons and above all the analog triggers ideal for car racing games.

The 7-inch screen offers a Full HD display, better than the Switch, but which does not allow you to play next-generation games in their 4K version for certain Xbox and PC titles. A refresh rate of 60 frames per second is offered, while the GeForce Now service allows, for example, to offer a cloud gaming experience that can reach 120 Hz via other systems.

However, these technical choices do not interfere with the experience in any way… Provided you have a good connection. We can regret that at this price level the console does not offer WiFi 6 or 5G. Logitech got it right though. The system, under Android, allows you to navigate between the GeForce Now and Game Pass interfaces and it is even possible to add emulators compatible with Android to launch old video games – provided you have the roms – that you can here add via a dedicated micro-SD card.

A compelling gaming experience

At the same time, the gaming experience thanks to the cloud is convincing here. In particular, we were able to test games like Forza Horizon 5 or A Plague Tale: Requiem, renowned for their graphic beauty. And if the definition here went to 1080p, the rendering offered by the 7-inch screen was surprisingly readable and interesting to play. The latency, inherent in the cloud depending on your connection, was present but did not prevent you from enjoying a game in good conditions.

Even more, it is the autonomy that pleasantly surprised us. Logitech promises 10 hours of uninterrupted gaming, and in fact the battery has held up, before having to go through the recharge box. A good point, as the tests carried out on smartphones to play in streaming prove to be very energy-intensive. Another plus point is the controls. If we praised the ergonomics of the G Cloud at the start of this test, it is important to underline its interest in the short game.

One question remains: who is the Logitech G Cloud for? The most avid gamers will prefer to play directly with their console connected to their television or a nice gaming screen, via a healthy download of the game to overcome any latency. Still, this type of machine intends to appeal to more casual players who want to get their hands on the latest releases without having to invest in an expensive gaming PC, or an Xbox Series S or X sold new at 499 euros. The G Cloud here provides access to a large panel of games, including most blockbusters, while Logitech promises to offer an open platform to other cloud gaming players, like Luna, the offer offered by Amazon but which is not yet available in France.
