On January 18, the first large diameter hosiery in Alsace was inaugurated. This installation was carried out by the local textile workshop called Au Fil d’Altaïr and located in the Meinau district of Strasbourg. With this hosiery, the company’s objective is to contribute to the relocation of the textile industry in France and to highlight local craftsmanship. After witnessing the gradual closure of the various workshops in the region, Alsace is rediscovering the know-how of knitting.

The new 200 m² space contains four large knitting machines. 400 to 500 meters of fabric can be produced there every day. The workshop focuses on three types of knit: fleece, jersey and rib.

Au Fil d’Altaïr wishes to offer its know-how to textile brands keen to manufacture their products in France and regain control of the entire clothing production chain.
This first hosiery also required the creation of new professions. To master the machines, Lucie, a textile engineer, had to be specially trained. She is the only one on the site at the moment, but should be joined by other trained employees.

Once knitted, the rolls obtained are sold as is to different companies or transformed on site. Modeling, pattern making, cutting and making… different stages can complete the hosiery activity.
