The statue, which weighs more than 317 kilograms, is one of 75 Mickey Mouse-inspired sculptures commissioned by Disney for the 75th anniversary of the mouse in 2003. In fact, this statue, created by Breanna Rowlettewas presented to Disney California Adventure in 2003, along with all the other statues in the series. Lobster Mickeythis is the name of this contemporary work, might be admired in the Californian park near Pacific Wharf (a perfect place given the theme of this one).

After his short stay at Disneyland Resort, the statue made its way to the city of Boston. The artwork was last seen nearly two decades ago at Quincy Market where it entertained tourists and shopkeepers – before disappearing for a long time and then as part of an operation , having been sold in 2005 at an auction organized by Disney.

In the meantime, references to Lobster Mickey 6ft tall have appeared on Atlas Obscura, a website dedicated to bizarre monuments, and in a comic book Zippy the Pinhead of 2019.

Deon Point, creative director of Boston Concepts’ sneaker store, became obsessed with finding the statue. He spent five years following online discussions before finally spotting an eBay listing. The statue ended up being displayed on a lawn in New Jersey, but needed some repairs. It was discolored, split into sections, and its concrete foundation had begun to crumble. The creative director hired a local artist to refurbish and repaint the statue.

The day before Halloween, Lobster Mickey made its second public debut in the city, when it was installed on the floor of Concepts’ Newbury Street showroom.

“People were kind of terrified,” Point told the Boston Globe. “People think we created this thing, which of course we didn’t. »

Finally, he said he planned to keep Lobster Mickey exhibited over the Christmas holidays, before finding a new long-term home somewhere in Boston.
