Magdalena Lobnig has reached the semi-finals at the World Rowing Championships in Belgrade. In her quarter-finals on Wednesday, the Carinthian was only beaten by Karolien Florijn from the Netherlands by 2.54 seconds and will fight for a place in the final on Friday. In the non-Olympic lightweight men’s singles, Lukas Reim made it through to the semi-finals. Paul Ruttmann/Julian Schöberl fell by the wayside in the easy double scull.
Lobnig was relieved when she returned to single rowing. “It was an increase compared to the preliminary heat and I needed it. I was very nervous because on paper it was a great quarterfinal,” said the Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo 2020. “My minimum goal, the semifinals A/B , I achieved and now I’m looking forward to the semifinals.” ÖRV national coach Robert Sens was also overjoyed. “Lobnig is back. If you consider that it was only her second single race this season, it was great,” he emphasized.
Reim also secured his entry into the semifinals of the top 12 with second place in the quarterfinals. The rower from Möwe Salzburg will be back on Thursday. Paul Ruttmann and Julian Schöberl finished sixth in their quarter-finals in the lightweight double sculls boat class, and the duo now continues in the C final. Also in action on Thursday are para rower Christoph Stadlbauer and the lightweight double sculls Louisa Altenhuber and Lara Tiefenthaler (both in the semifinals C/D).
The World Championships in Belgrade are not just regarding a top World Championship placement. Athletes will also have their first chance to secure a quota spot for the 2024 Olympics. “Of course I want to get into the A final, because then I would have qualified for Paris on Friday,” said Lobnig. Headwind is announced once more for Friday. That’s praiseworthy, she said. “Headwind makes it long and hard, those are absolutely my conditions.”
