Lizzo tired of body shaming: «I’m leaving the music business»

“I’ll stop.” This concludes the social post of the American singer Lizzo who seems to want to withdraw from the world of music. Emmy- and Grammy-winning artist Melissa Viviane Jefferson writes, “I’m tired of putting up with everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music, make people happy, and help the world be a little better than I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me. I am constantly dealing with the lies that are told regarding me to gain prestige and views… I am always the target of teasing because of the way I look,” she continued.

«I get picked on by people who don’t know me and disrespect me. I didn’t sign up for this shit”, the performer wrote once more in her post which ends with “I QUIT”, which translated means “I quit, I quit”. Lizzo’s post was greeted by many supportive comments, including that of Paris Hilton who wrote: “We love you, Queen.” Her size and choice to wear tight clothing have made this artist a heroine of the body positivity movement, but also the subject of body shaming comments. In May last year, she blocked her X account and threatened to leave the music industry following a wave of comments regarding her physical appearance and that she avoided losing weight because it wouldn’t be advantageous for her brand.

Last August she faced legal problems: three of her former dancers accused her of having created a hostile work environment, complete with sexually denigrating behaviour. The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court names Lizzo, her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc and her dance team director, Shirlene Quigley. The complaints filed by plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez include harassment based on sex, religion, race and disability.
