Pamela Hayden, the beloved voice behind Bart Simpson’s loyal friend Milhouse Van Houten, is set to retire from the cherished animated series after an impressive span of 35 years. Her final performance will grace the screen on Sunday, Nov. 24, during the highly anticipated episode “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” airing on Fox.
Milhouse, a recognizable character since the show’s inception in its first season in 1989, originally caught the audience’s attention in a Butterfinger commercial prior to his cartoon debut. Series creator Matt Groening expressed that Milhouse was envisioned to provide Bart with a companion in the school cafeteria, humorously noting the character’s name was chosen for its unfortunate nature—”Milhouse is probably the most unfortunate name a kid could have.”
Alongside Milhouse, Hayden has lent her voice to a variety of characters within the series, including the notorious school bully Jimbo Jones and Rod Flanders, one of Ned Flanders’ sons. According to Fox, the process of finding new voices for her characters will commence “in the near future.”
“The time has come for me to hang up my microphone, but how do I say goodbye to ‘The Simpsons’? ……not easily,” she wrote in a heartfelt statement.
Expressing gratitude, she said, “It’s been an honor and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show, and to give voice to Milhouse (and Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey, Malibu Stacy, and many others).”
She added warmly, “Here’s to everyone who made this terrific ride I’ve been on possible. Thanks for 35 years!! Be well and happy. My best to you all. P.S. I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses.”

Matt Groening thanked Hayden for creating “tons of laughs” and for making Milhouse a character who is both “hilarious and real,” while executive producer James L. Brooks praised her invaluable spirit, asserting, “She is a model for having a great spirit for every cast she has been a part of. We will miss her.”
According to IMDb, Hayden’s voice has been a staple in over 600 episodes of the long-running series, which is currently airing its 36th season. Additionally, she has showcased her voice talents in other popular animated series such as “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,” “Hey Arnold!” and “Pinky and the Brain.” Her iconic portrayal of Milhouse has also been featured across a variety of “Simpsons” video games and in the acclaimed “The Simpsons Movie.”
