The head of LIZDA, Inga Vanaga, following the meeting held on Monday with the Prime Minister Krišjāni Kariņa (JV) and the Minister of Education Anda Čakša (JV), said that the disagreement is, for example, regarding the salary supplement for currently better-paid teachers.

As the Prime Minister told journalists, according to the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM), the agreement stipulated that the lowest salaries of teachers should be raised, but the trade unions insist that not only the lowest, but also higher salaries should be raised in the same way. According to Kariņš, the main goal of the Ministry of Education and Culture was to raise the lowest wages and achieve their equalization, but the trade union believes that this is not the only goal.

Kariņš admitted that the increase calculations were made for the minimum hourly rate, so the Ministry of Interior will now make new calculations and the government will think regarding where to find more funding – whether to redistribute budget money or increase the budget deficit.

Vanaga also stated that during the negotiations, the Ministry of Education and Culture has committed to make new calculations on the hourly rate for teachers’ higher salaries as well.

On Tuesday at 10 a.m., another meeting of the Ministry of the Interior and the NET is planned, where the ministry will present the new calculations.

Hawk emphasized that the strike is not being stopped because all the demands of the strike have not been fulfilled. What happens next depends on tomorrow’s negotiations, the refined calculations and whether the government representatives will create an opportunity to provide additional funding to fulfill the strike agreement.

A meeting between LIZDA, the Ministry of the Interior and the Prime Minister is also planned for Tuesday followingnoon. If an agreement is reached, Kariņš will convene an emergency meeting of the government on Wednesday to approve the agreement.

Today, a three-day strike of educators began with a protest march and a meeting in Dom square, in which several thousand employees of educational and medical institutions participated. According to police estimates, approximately 6,000-8,000 participants took part in the event.

Vaaga claimed following the protest event that all the demands of the strike had not been met. If they are not fulfilled in the coming days, LIZDA does not rule out the possibility of extending the strike. On the other hand, the Ministry of Education and Science stated that the strike requirements have been met, therefore the strike organized by LIZDA is actually illegal.
