It is a Swedish organizational model that is increasingly attractive to us. The “Tube” model places interpersonal relations and “living well together” at the heart of the management of nursing homes. Among the hundred Belgian establishments which have adopted this model, under the impetus of the King Baudouin Foundation, we find the “Moulin à Cailloux” rest home in Tournai.
In this rest home managed by the CPAS of Tournai, the installation of the “Tubbe” model has led to concrete changes in the daily life of the residents. “It is up to the resident to say what is good for him. We respect his wishes and his needs, explains director Marie Neto. We adapt to him. If he wants to get up later, he gets up later…”
A petanque court and two cats…
It is in this philosophy that the rest home “Moulin à Cailloux” accepted the request of two ladies who wanted to adopt a cat. “For a few months we have been living with Marco and Mulanshows us Claire, one of these residents. I didn’t really want to go on living anymore. Since they are there, I have to live for them. Normally, you can’t adopt a cat from a nursing home, but here it’s accepted. I hope it will be like this until we go up there.”
Residents also have a say in how the facility operates. Ihe “Tubbe” model is also intended to be participatory. The rest home has therefore set up working groups. “One of them led to a change in breakfastresumes the director Marie Neto. It is now offered as a buffet as suggested by the residents. Another working group decided to create a petanque court.”
